Hives!

Makenna has been having inexplicable bouts of hives all weekend. These are similar to the two days of hives she had back in the end of February. They started on Saturday afternoon, when she woke up an hour into her nap whimpering. She was COVERED in big, thick, welty hives. Itching like crazy. It was a hard afternoon for her - she was itchy from the hives, and tired from not getting enough nap. Called the pediatrician's office to see what her dose of Benadryl would be (it wasn't listed on the bottle for her age) and gave her a dose, which helped give her some relief. Hives came back, and more Benadryl.

Sunday morning, hives were back. Benadryl. Also went out and got some Anti-itch lotion (kind like the pink Calamine lotion we all used when we came home from camp covered in bug bites and other assorted skin fun - only they make it in a clear formula now!!) Hives were gone, as long as there was fresh Benadryl in her system. Grandma and Grandpa came over to play (not babysit!!) with the kids so Derek and I could go out for my birthday. Poor Grandma - every time she stays with the kids to give us the day off, Makenna is sick (last time it was a fever of 103+). She woke up from her nap covered again, and had one on her face that made her look like she got hit with a softball. She also talked like her tongue was a bit swollen. Benadryl and lotion made them better, but they didn't go completely away until much later in the day this time.

Last night, she was hive free when I put her down at 8:30. I gave her Benadryl, just as insurance that they wouldn't come back with a vengeance while she was sleeping. Check on her at 11:30, and HIVES!!!!! Wake her up long enough to slather her in the anti itch medicine, as she can't have more Bendaryl until 2:30. Off to bed I go to worry. My mommy alarm clock woke me up at 2:45, so I went in to check on her - and NO HIVES. The Benadryl was out of her system by then, so I really don't get it!

Makenna woke up today completely hive free, but I called the pediatrician first thing this morning to see what they said about these mysterious outbreaks. They said to watch her, and if the hives came back again today, to call them back. Hive free through the morning and through lunch. Down for her nap at 1:15. Woke up at 4 and had a few spots of hives, mostly on her arms, which I just treated with the lotion. I called the pediatrician back, and they referred us to an allergist, and told us to start giving her Claritin instead of Benadryl for any further outbreaks. She went down tonight and didn't have any hives, so she didn't have any medicine at all today, and the outbreak wasn't nearly as severe as Saturday and Sunday.

So, she has her appointment on October 10th with the allergist. Hopefully we can get her tested and get to the bottom of this!
